BUTIA YATAY

Native to Southern Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina , this palm is thought to be the most graceful of the genus, reaching over 10m in height in the wild , and forming huge stands of trees, numbering millions.

It should be noted that all palms we inspected in the south west corner of South Brazil were in fact Butia capitatas. We could not find any Butia yatays until crossing the border into Argentina.

With good hardiness to cold, many palms have been imported to Northern Europe in recent years.

Butia yatay possesses possibly the largest seed of the genus which is oval in shape.
